Exotic Pet Care

Wellness Examinations

exoticsThe veterinarians and staff at Steele Creek Animal Hospital offer primary medical care for rabbits, ferrets, and pocket pets. Because it is often difficult to determine if an exotic pet is ill, we strongly recommend physical examinations twice a year to check for health problems plus annual monitoring to check for nutritional and husbandry-related conditions.

In order to survive attacks from their predators, exotic animals normally conceal their illnesses in the wild. As a result, their medical problems often go unnoticed for long periods of time. By the time you recognize that there is a problem with your exotic pet, the condition is often extremely serious. With bi-annual medical examinations by a veterinarian at Steele Creek Animal Hospital, problems are often diagnosed before they become serious medical conditions.

Should a second medical opinion be needed for your pet, we can refer you to an exotic pet specialist in our Charlotte area.

Diagnostic Services

Laboratory Testing

We utilize our in-house laboratory and specialized university laboratories to diagnose many ailments and conditions affecting exotic pets. Our in-house laboratory technology enables us to run blood tests on the smallest pets. The specialized outside laboratories we utilize are invaluable in helping us determine what could be wrong with your exotic pet.

FerretsBlood testing allows us to diagnose conditions that often cannot be seen during routine physical examinations.

Radiology

X-rays are useful in evaluating a number of areas of your exotic pet's body, including bones, lungs, air sacs, heart, coelomic cavity, liver, and more. Our sophisticated digital radiography technology enables our veterinarians to take high-quality radiographs of your exotic pet in under a minute. Additionally, digital imaging allows us to manipulate the radiograph which enables the veterinarian to focus in on specific areas in the image and perform precise calculations if needed.

Some of the exotic pets we treat include:
