Nutritional Counseling

Proper nutrition is a very important aspect of overall health and wellness. Early signs of illness often include a change in your pet’s eating habits or body weight. Maintaining proper body weight allows your pet to have a longer, more comfortable life.

We offer:

  • Advice on dietary changes that benefit your pet as he/she ages or alters his/her lifestyle and activity level.
  • Weight management options, such as exercise programs and packages, to curb the rising problem of obesity in pets.
  • Supplements for skin, hair coat, and joints.
  • Probiotics and natural/herbal supplements.
  • Diet management for pets with diet-related medical conditions (prescription diets, homemade diets, etc.). Prescription diets (including Iams, Hills, Purina, and Royal Canin) are available at our hospital or through our online store.

Behavioral Counseling and Referrals

Behavior problems adversely affect family/pet relationships and are the number one reason pets are surrendered to shelters or euthanized. The staff at Steele Creek Animal Hospital in Charlotte, NC does everything it can so that this situation does not happen in your family.

We offer behavioral counseling for common behavior problems such as house training issues, storm phobias, inappropriate urinations/defecations, fear aggression, scratching, digging, and chewing. The following options are also available:

  • Referrals to area trainers knowledgeable in handling specific behavior issues.
  • Referral to Board Certified Behaviorist to manage aggression and other significant behavior concerns.

Gayl and SonnyMicrochipping

We implant AVID microchips but have scanners for all popular brands as well.

AVID microchips are globally recognized, which means they can be scanned and read almost anywhere in the world. With a simple injection, a microchip can be implanted under your pet's skin. After your pet has been microchipped, we perform a scan at each veterinary visit to ensure that the microchip is still present and readable.

It's important to remember that a lost pet is not merely an inconvenience, it's the number one cause of pet death in the country. That’s why we recommend microchipping every pet.

In December 2009, Steele Creek Animal Hospital received a call from the Asheville Humane Society requesting owner information for a stray orange tabby cat that had just been collected by Asheville Animal Control. The cat was named Sonny and he has an incredible story.

When Sonny was about three months old, Gayl and her boyfriend noticed him near the door of a restaurant; he was meowing and sniffing for food. After canvassing the nearby neighborhood in search of his owners, Gayl took the friendly little cat home. That was in 1997. Gayl and Sonny spent the next year together and Sonny proved to be lovable and smart, but in the spring of 1998, Sonny vanished.

Shelter searches, lost pet ads, cable TV announcements, and neighborhood searches failed to reveal any sign of Sonny until a December 12, 2009 phone call came in to the office. Sonny had been located 2 1/2 hours away in Asheville and because of his microchip, animal care professionals were able to reunite him with Gayl.

Sonny is now 16 years old, happy, healthy and loved. As yet, he has not revealed how he traveled all the way to Asheville nor where he lived for the 12 years he was away. However, one thing is for sure... the microchip did its job.

Euthanasia

When we identify a current or future life-threatening illness in a pet, the veterinarians and staff at Steele Creek Animal Hospital help our clients begin the process of acceptance and adjustment.

Many painful, difficult decisions lie ahead. We are all pet owners, too, and certainly understand what you are facing. We assist in decisions about the quality of life for pet and owner alike, including questions about how much and how long to administer treatment and whether euthanasia is the most compassionate decision.

With a focus on your pet's comfort, our staff assists in planning the "when and where" of saying goodbye and considering whether you would like to be present. We offer several options for your pet's remains. You may take your pet for a private burial at your chosen resting place. Should you prefer cremation, we will arrange for private cremation (with your pet's ashes returned to you) or will care for your pet's remains in a communal cremation.

PharmacyWe can direct clients to support groups in the Charlotte community or individual counseling for grief support if needed.

On-Site Pharmacy

As the prescribing veterinarian for your pet's medications, we are able to ensure there is a direct link between the exam room and our pharmacy. This means your pet will receive the right medication, at the right dose, in the right form as quickly as possible. We will also be able to easily guide you on the medication's use as well as monitor its effectiveness.

Ensuring that you have convenient and timely access to competitively priced medications is an important aspect of our veterinary practice. Here are a few advantages to you, the pet owner:

  • Our on-site pharmacy stocks routine outpatient medications as well as medications used to care for hospital and surgical patients.
  • Online pharmacy provides prescription medications (including heartworm preventatives) and pet care supplies (including flea and tick protection) shipped directly to your home.
  • Prescription diets are available through on-site and online pharmacy.
  • Refills for our clients are available through our website.
  • Prescriptions are available to compounding pharmacies for unique drug or dosing needs.
  • For refills of most medications, your pet must have had a physical examination within the last year. Blood testing is necessary for some medications. Since each patient will metabolize a drug differently, monitoring the function of major organs responsible for drug metabolism ensures that each patient's dose is tailored to safely meet their individual needs.
  • For pharmacy assistance, please call our reception desk – (704) 588-4400.
  • Please remember to always follow the complete label instructions when administering medications to your pet.
